Brief Look at Japan's History
Japan first inhabitants came from eastern and southeastern Asia and are called the Jomon culture that left the clearest archaeological record on the island producing clay cookware and using stone tools as hunter and gatherers. The next cultural period is the Yayori culture that is the first agricultural people who cultivated rice similar to their western neighbors. Also, weapons, tools, and ceremonial items where made from bronze and iron. Class society emerged as people settled the land where their pottery flourished and depicted every day life. Moving on to the Yamato Period, many cultural influences from China and Korea civilizations where introduced most notable the introduction of Buddhism. A system of writing was created, centralized power government formed mimicking the Chinese model, and the formation of Japan as a united people began to form. Feudalism or property holding came with the Kamakuna period and transfer of power from aristocracy to a provincial warrior class. Samurai classes followed Zen Buddhism emphasizing self-discipline and simplicity. Japan being an island nation aided its people in fighting off two invasion attempts of the Mongols. Tokogawa period will be the final era of traditional Japanese government choosing to close the nation off from the rest of the world experiencing peace and prosperity.
Western civilization would at last come knocking at the door in the form of the United States seeking admission to Japan’s ports and the Treaty of Kanazawa will open the doors leading to the Meiji Period of Japan’s modernization. Abolishment of the samurai and feudal system to the cabinet system of government propels the country to buildup their military strength propelling the nation to war with its neighbors. Colonialism and expansion will lead Japan to seek power and status by their belief they descended from the land of the Gods seeking control of Asia. This ambition will prove fatal to the country because of it pride even when faced with defeat becoming the only country to have a nuclear weapon used on it killing thousands with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasawki. Pacifist nation materialized, however, the country vowed to regain their economic security after the devastating event, and would join the United Nations as a way to conduct foreign relations. In recent years, the country suffered from a natural disaster that interfered with their economy and brought forth the issue of energy consumption of the nation after a nuclear power plant accident as a result of the earthquake. Japan will once again move towards a new period of adjustment as Asia pulls to the forefront of the global economy.
